Description

The Ash singles form a twelve-piece set of objects that can be used on their own or in clusters, addressing coffee, console, foyer, and side table, bench, and stool programs. Created in response to regional manufacturing challenges, the collection uses diseased ash wood for the pedestals and either ash wood or patinated cast bronze for the tops. Every component is sourced, designed, and manufactured within 150 miles of STACKLAB’s studio in Toronto.
At its core, the collection uses a single eggshaped design, minimizing the need for various patterns and molds. The tools used in making these pieces are efficiently repurposed into the product, conserving factory space.
Wood shavings from the milling process are recycled, combined with reusable refractory sand, and then used to shape the mold for the optional bronze tops. As the metal is poured into this mold, the sawdust gets burned away, and the sand is reused, ensuring minimal waste. The end result is a metal top with a distinctive textured finish.
STACKLAB’s approach integrates design with manufacturing from the outset, leading to optimal use of resources. This process, enhanced with algorithmic insights, ensures that 80% of the materials are repurposed and only 1% of waste is produced by volume.
Limited to 25 units per item, the Ash Collection is a collaborative effort between STACKLAB and its regional partners. Additionally, three artist proofs will be available in ash wood and solid-cast aluminum when the edition closes.
